{"id":160,"date":"2017-04-07T08:05:42","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T14:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firstdrafts.net\/physicalscience\/?page_id=160"},"modified":"2025-03-05T08:10:25","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T15:10:25","slug":"integration","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/firstdrafts.net\/physicalscience\/integration\/","title":{"rendered":"Science &#038; Arts Integration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For follow-up conversations or other resources, please contact me:<br>Adam Johnston, Weber State University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"mailto:ajohnston@weber.edu\">ajohnston@weber.edu<\/a>, 801.626.7711<br><a href=\"http:\/\/weber.edu\/ajohnston\">weber.edu\/ajohnston<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow up resources to workshops\/activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>&#8220;Stringing Together&#8221; Music &amp; Physics<\/b>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This was some work I did with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weber.edu\/artslearning\">Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Program<\/a> based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onstageogden.org\">Onstage Ogden<\/a>&#8216;s hosted performance of cellist <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UP3_S-lpT1E?feature=shared\">Gabriel Royal<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We put together <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLHMMenvoeoa5BIW8tRIxoVhtTGjfJS7ga&amp;si=yGTRjx4mjnEZuyux\">this collection of videos<\/a>, including one hosted by Gabriel himself, and others demonstrating some things you could do on your own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;ve got this <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/160X-lOf85GZlyMz_kb_ZRvukVF7mOM8bmw--pP8I-MA\/edit?usp=sharing\">collection of resources<\/a> that tie together with workshops we&#8217;ve done for this, as well as some kits that we made for teachers or you could check out.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Making meaning: Words<\/b><br>How do we construct and create ideas? How are there parallels in science and language?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We used Taylor Mali\u2019s poetry for this activity. His mission and work can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/TaylorMali.com\">TaylorMali.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another version of this activity could be to look at scientific evidence through pictures. One example is \u201cTricky Tracks,\u201d which can be found at: <a href=\"http:\/\/fossilfinder.coe.uga.edu\/teachers-zone\/curriculum\/tricky-tracks\/\">http:\/\/fossilfinder.coe.uga.edu\/teachers-zone\/curriculum\/tricky-tracks\/<\/a><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Observation: Bubbles<\/b><br>Where do observations come from and what do we make of them? How do we foster observation as both scientists and artists?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019ve written up an example of how I use this activity: <a href=\"http:\/\/firstdrafts.net\/physicalscience\/bubbles\/\">http:\/\/firstdrafts.net\/physicalscience\/bubbles\/<\/a>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I try to make sense of how we are human in all endeavors of science and art; for example: <a href=\"http:\/\/firstdrafts.net\/making-science\/\">http:\/\/firstdrafts.net\/making-science\/<\/a><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Movement and Space: Paper <\/b><br>How does moving with paper give us a sense for nature, expression, design, engineering? What does the experience add?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My work with Erik Stern and Dance|Science Fest has produced lots of science and artistry: <a href=\"https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\">https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In particular, you might look at this prompt and video: <a href=\"https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\/prompts\/paper\/\">https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\/prompts\/paper\/<\/a><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Timing and Communication: Pendulums<\/b><br>How do we keep track of and express time? Where are the complements of art and science in the analysis of a pendulum\u2019s motion?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is also done in the Dance|Science Fest work found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\">https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And, in particular, there\u2019s some examples here: <a href=\"https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\/prompts\/patterns\/\">https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\/prompts\/patterns\/<\/a><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Choreography and Engineering: <\/b><br>Compare \u201cengineering\u201d with \u201cchoreographing.\u201d How do arts and sciences parallel? Contrast? Where is integration appropriate, and how?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is something we fret and think about a lot in Dance|Science workshops: <a href=\"https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\/workshops\/\">https:\/\/dancesciencefest.org\/workshops\/<\/a>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s something that I grapple with quite a bit in writing about learning more generally.
